Downton Abbey Wears Cufflinks

Saturday, February 25th, 2012

In season one of the underground hit show, Downton Abbey, you may have come across the acute obsession to detail in clothing and appearance. To our delight, cufflinks played a large part in this Victorian obsession. When Matthew Crawley comes to Downton, he finds himself put-off by the amount of attention he receives from the household servants. He can’t fathom the need for a footman, someone to dress him “like a dog” everyday, and innocently appeals to dismiss their superfluous services.

But after a seemingly cordial run-in with the head of the household, he grows to understand that everyone “needs to play his or her part” and it’s quite wrong to dismiss servants when they want to do their job. He questions Crawley, asking if when he takes over the Downton domain, will he dismiss the numerous staff members simply because of Crawley’s taste, or will he realize that they’re place in at Downton, they are an integral part of the household, and their living must not be taken lightly.

It’s then, and only then, does Crawley open up to the idea of being waited on by servants. One of these tasks include PICKING OUT CUFFLINKS and PUTTING THEM ON. “I think these are too formal for the occasion. Can you pick another pair?” “Would you like the crescent ones, sir? I think they are much more suitable.” Such a wonderful moment captured in film…

“The Downton Abbey estate stands a splendid example of confidence and mettle, its family enduring for generations and its staff a well-oiled machine of propriety. But change is afoot at Downton — change far surpassing the new electric lights and telephone. A crisis of inheritance threatens to displace the resident Crawley family, in spite of the best efforts of the noble and compassionate Earl, Robert Crawley (Hugh Bonneville, Miss Austen Regrets); his American heiress wife, Cora (Elizabeth McGovern); his comically implacable, opinionated mother, Violet (Maggie Smith, David Copperfield); and his beautiful, eldest daughter, Mary, intent on charting her own course. Reluctantly, the family is forced to welcome its heir apparent, the self-made and proudly modern Matthew Crawley (Dan Stevens), himself none too happy about the new arrangements. As Matthew’s bristly relationship with Mary begins to crackle with electricity, hope for the future of Downton’s dynasty takes shape. But when petty jealousies and ambitions grow among the family and the staff, scheming and secrets — both delicious and dangerous — threaten to derail the scramble to preserve Downton Abbey. Created and written by Oscar-winner Julian Fellowes (Gosford Park), Downton Abbey offers a spot-on portrait of a vanishing way of life.”

Top Habits that Improve Your Looks

Friday, February 24th, 2012

Change your sheets regularly. Dirty sheets lead to facial break outs. It’s quite an obvious tip, but many people don’t bother to change their sheets every other week. The longer that pillow case sits at the head of your bed, the more acne you’ll have by morning…Farah Averill from Askmen.com says the following: “It’s particularly important to lay out some fresh bedding if you frequently have a female in your bed, as residue from women’s makeup and hair products can get left behind on your sheets and subsequently be transferred to your face.”

See a barber every three to six weeks to get a mandatory shape up. Some men let this slide and go longer without getting a hair cut. But we’re here to let you know gentlemen, it’s necessary to keep up the clean cut. Necessity for a clean, polished look, and won’t hurt your wallet too much at around $12-$15 a pop.
Check out these vintage Sawblade Cufflinks, just like the barbers used to use…and still do

Shave after showering. Who would thunk it? Well, you know that foggy mirror you see when you step outside the raining waters of the shower head? It’s the humidity from the hot water and it actually opens up your pores and softens the hair follicle. Ever see those movies where the men in barber shops put a hot towel compress on the face for several minutes? it’s the same thing, but it will save your complexion and make for an easier shave if you  wait until after you hit the shower.
Wash your feet everyday, with soap. No brainer right? Ah, but some men think that the drips of shampoo that cascade down from the head or chest or other surrounding areas is good enough to clean the feet. NOT true. Bacteria builds up quickly on the feet, especially because it’s a moist area that is normally covered throughout must of the day. Get in between the toes with the soap and rinse clean. You’ll save money on odor-eaters too in the long run.

Water!! Water and water! If you spend so much time in your sacred, coveted shower, think how much the inside of your body loves water? Drink at least 8 glasses a day. it flushes out your system, reduces facial blemishes, and keeps your skin radiate and fresh.

Three Men Of The Year: Fashion and TV 2012

Three men to keep an eye on for the New Year…

Ashton Kutcher

Supposedly things have been heating up between Lea Michele, Kutcher’s co-star in the new movie “New Year’s Eve.” The two seemed ultra comfortable with each other and full of smiles when they dawned the red carpet together for their premiere. Check out their cheeky smiles. And we can’t help but give a thumbs up to Ashton’s new swaggerific look ever since he brought up with Demi Moore. If you don’t know who Lea Michele is, don’t worry, we didn’t either, but for the record she’s a star on the TV hit series “Glee.” We don’t think they’ll make a perfect match but it’s nice to see two co-workers love each other’s company.

But she’s not the only new leading lady in Ashton’s life. US Weekly Reports that “Ashton Kutcher is flaunting a new woman — and sources say he hooked up with her prior to splitting from wife Demi Moore last month. The actor, 33, spent Christmas in Italy with screenwriter Lorene Scafaria — who, until recently, was dating The OC actor Adam Brody.”

Us Weekly – Wed, Dec 28, 2011 9:00 AM

“In exclusive Us Weekly photos, the duo were snapped checking out the sights in Italy, including the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa over the Christmas holiday. Meanwhile Moore, 49, kept a low-profile, spending her holidays with family — including daughter Rumer Willis — in Parrot Cay. “She’s doing really well,” a source tells Us. “[She’s] waiting for all of her stuff to come out in the new year [including] her Lifetime show that she’s executive producing.” “Ashton started seeing her while each was in a relationship,” says a source. Reps for both Kutcher and Scafaria deny this and tell Us “They’re just friends.” And it wasn’t the first field trip for the duo — on Dec. 9 and 10, they cozied up at Yellowstone Club ski resort (snowboarding and playing shuffleboard) in Montana. Kutcher’s ex Moore, of course, announced their plans to divorce in late November following his revealed affair with a different woman, 22-year-old Sara Leal, in September.”–US Weekly

America’s Most Haunted Places

Saturday, October 22nd, 2011

People always wonder: are ghosts real? Paranormal TV presents a very interesting series on America’s Most Haunted Sites. Some of the stories are pretty eerie, so sit back and relax…if you can.

Manhattan Bistro, New York, New York
Manhattan Bistro, located at the ultra-trendy section of Soho at 129 Spring Street, is a French restaurant known for its famous ghost Juliana Elmore Sands. She was reportedly killed in the building in 1799 when her body was thrown into a well in the basement. Her spirit is often referred to as the “Ghost of Spring Street,” and can be seen as a vapor rising from the kitchen floor, occasionally scattering dishes and throwing ashtrays.

Moundsville Penitentiary; Moundsville, West Virginia
Moundsville Penitentiary, located in West Virginia, has a history of being one of the most violent prisons in the United States. Around 1,000 inmates have made their way to this location and were holed up in cramped quarters. Many of the prisoners were hung or executed in the electric chair, but some were murdered by their fellow inmates, especially due to the excessive riots. Built over 100 years ago and closed in 1995, the tortured ghosts of the inmates are thought to be still trapped behind the jail bars, and visitors report to have seen and heard them on tours.

Waverly Hills Sanatorium Louisville, Ky.
Legend has it that this former Kentucky hospital is haunted by the ghosts of some of the thousands of ill-treated tuberculosis patients who died here in the mid-1900s. One of the most famous features is the “body chute,” which was used to transport corpses from the hospital to the bottom of the hill.

Stanley Hotel: Estes Park, Colo.
Staff at the 1909 hotel—which inspired Stephen King’s novel The Shining but is not where the 1980 movie was filmed—have heard parties in an empty ballroom and music from an untouched piano. Ghost hunters also report seeing a table jump two feet in the air.

Chloe, a slave-ghost who is alleged to have had a passionate romance with a rich Myrtle son but whose ear was cut off when she was discovered eavesdropping. Apparently she baked a poisonous birthday cake which killed the wife and two children. Ewww. Creepy.

FROM their official website: “These famous spirits include Michael, the Irish stonemason who fell to his death while building the hotel in 1885, Theodora, the cancer patient of the Dr. Baker hospital days who seems to need help finding her room key, Norman Baker in his white suit and lavender shirt, Morris the cat, a mystery patient in a white nightgown who appears in the luxury suites at the foot of your bed or any of the innumerable “spirits” who have been captured by the thousands of guests and hundreds of thousands of images captured while roaming the halls of this world famous hotel.

Investigated by the Sci-Fi Channel’s Ghost Hunters, the hotel has also been featured on NBC’s Today Show, A&E’s Haunted Road Trips, USA Today and most recently the Bio Network’s My Ghost Story, the hotel continues to gain popularity as the legend continues.

The Way of The Rustic Boot

Thursday, October 20th, 2011

You are what you wear. Or at least what you put on your feet. Not long ago, an individuals’ livelihood was directly dependent upon keeping their body safe from nature’s harsh elements. A good pair of shoes to ‘weather the storm’ was a necessity for survival and unsurprisingly, it still is. This season the  rustic, rugged, yet modernized hiking boot is back. Here are a few examples of the hottest trends for your toes this season:

1. Otadan boot from Aldo shoe stores. Actually, they have an entire line of casual boots that pair wonderfully with jeans, dress slacks, and even hiking gear. They won’t positively break the bank either, starting at around $150.

Pair this suave, rugged boot with a symbolic adornment from nature. You can take the great outdoors with you to that business meeting or unwanted weekend shopping trip with the wife. If you can’t have a fishing pole, a six pack, and a bon fire on a fall evening, you might as well take the woods with you:

2. Next up we have possibly the best boots made in America: LL. Bean ‘s Beanboot with Thinsulate. The great thing about this type of boot is not only is it completely functional and stylish, but it is also hand-made in Maine. The can take a heavy mud beating, get rained on, and scrapped by unforgiving pavement, but they still protect your feet. You can also get them insulated with sheep’s fur for a slightly higher price. The BEST part is…wait for it…if at any time, with or without a receipt, you wish to exchange your boot for another pair, you can! No extra cost, no hassle, just simple quick exchange. And no, we do not work for LL bean….

Isn’t hunting season coming up? Pair these ultra hip boots with a pair of hand-painted cufflinks from the famous Pierce and Hobbs:

3. Last we have the classic Timberland boot with a twist. Not too street, yet not too rustic, this Timberland boot is a great spin on a classic look. The brown coloring will look great with just about any of this season’s sweater colors: grey, mustard, navy blue, and hunter green.
