Ways to Warm

Sunday, February 3rd, 2013

Along with the rest of the Western world, Cufflinksman has been in a deep winter slumber (when it comes to our regular blogging). But we’re coming out hibernation this February and we’re ready to give you your regular programming. Thanks for your support over the Holiday season and we appreciate your readership.

Going along the theme of hibernation, we thought we’d give you some inside tips on how to stay warm throughout the rest of these harsh winter months. It’s been a bizarre season, ranging from freezing temperatures to random 60 degree days, but this IS 2013. Need we forget? So we’re proud to give you fashionable, comforting ways to stay warm this season:

Add more rugs and throws

Especially if you have leather furniture, in the middle of winter, you really want to create a “nesting” effect in your living room. Slipping and sliding on a cold leather couch whilst watching 30 Rock is not our idea of a good Wednesday evening, you know? Add some textured throws from the regular big-whig stores such as Target, Marshalls, etc. Especially in February, most of these winter items are on sale, so it’s time to add some new warmth to your living space. And going along with that idea, there’s nothing worse than coming out a downy warm bed in the morning to have your little piggies touch a cold wooden floor, so add some plush rugs to the mix too (again, they will be on sale this time of the season…)

Try this throw from Pottery Barn…

Bath time

Take it back in time for a minute to your childhood days of long bubble baths. Just because you have a grownup job and have a cable bill doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a warm bath a few times a week. Remember when your grandmother would always say, “Nothing warms the bones like a hot bath…” Well, she was right. So get to soaking.

Regular cups of tea to your routine

Coffee is the busy man’s drink, but tea is the zen master’s drink. Tea has so many great qualities for the bodies, including antioxidants, but also that warming, calming feeling–especially if you’re drinking chamomile. It’ll warm up the chest and create a soothing effect for the rest of your body. Steep with love.

Homemade Soup

You’re down to the last of your grocery shopping from two weeks ago. You have a couple cans and not much else. What to do? You’re cold, hungry, and the delivery guy refuses to come to your apartment in the middle of a snow storm. Make a simple chicken soup! It’ll last for at least 3 days and can easily be re-heated. Here’s our secret soup recipe that we’ll share with you:

And while cooking, don’t forget to don our eclectic Salt and Pepper Shaker Cufflinks...

Salt and Pepper Shakers

1 boneless, skinless Chicken Breast (fried in olive oil, salt, pepper) and added to broth, 1 can of chicken broth, 1 can of vegetable broth, 1/2 can of water, 1 small can of green beans, 1 small can of corn, 1 small can of sliced carrots, 1/2 can of diced tomatoes, 1/3 cup (or so) of ketchup, pinch of chili sauce, pinch of diced garlic (in olive oil, doesn’t have to be fresh), seasonings. Heat for about 20 minutes and there you have it–chicken soup for the soul and body.

Layers, layers, layerrrrs

We’re a fashion company, so we have to talk about layers (which we love!) Over the past few years layers have been in style in every aspect–whether it’s a blazer over cardigan over a tee or a pair of long-johns under jeans mixed with really thick boot socks. Add on a scarf and properly accessorized hat and there you have it.

Add thicker curtains to your bedroom

You don’t necessarily have to seal every window in your house or apartment. You can simply purchased an extra lined curtain for your window to keep out the night drafts. This is really effective at keeping your energy costs down too. Just make sure to open the curtains during the day to let the sun naturally warm your room.

U.S. Lands on Mars

Monday, August 6th, 2012

And so…we landed on Mars!

No, this isn’t the beginnings of a Ron Hubbard novel, but actual real life. At approximately 1:31am, last night, or morning rather, Curiosity landed on Mars. And there was no cat to kill it either.

Fox News reports, “Through the chute, a unique robot arm and a rocket-powered hood, the rover slowed until it drifted to a stop on Mars, to cheers and applause from the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory late Sunday.

“Touchdown confirmed,” engineer Allen Chen said. “We’re safe on Mars.

Minutes after the landing signal reached Earth at 10:32 p.m. PDT, Curiosity beamed back the first black-and-white pictures from inside the crater showing its wheel and its shadow, cast by the afternoon sun.

“We landed in a nice flat spot. Beautiful, really beautiful,” said engineer Adam Steltzner, who led the team that devised the tricky landing routine. The rover then released a slightly higher resolution pair of pictures.”

And from the NASA website, “NASA Lands Car-Size Rover Beside Martian Mountain

PASADENA, Calif. — NASA’s most advanced Mars rover Curiosity has landed on the Red Planet. The one-ton rover, hanging by ropes from a rocket backpack, touched down onto Mars Sunday to end a 36-week flight and begin a two-year investigation.

The Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) spacecraft that carried Curiosity succeeded in every step of the most complex landing ever attempted on Mars, including the final severing of the bridle cords and flyaway maneuver of the rocket backpack.

“Today, the wheels of Curiosity have begun to blaze the trail for human footprints on Mars. Curiosity, the most sophisticated rover ever built, is now on the surface of the Red Planet, where it will seek to answer age-old questions about whether life ever existed on Mars — or if the planet can sustain life in the future,” said NASA Administrator Charles Bolden. “This is an amazing achievement, made possible by a team of scientists and engineers from around the world and led by the extraordinary men and women of NASA and our Jet Propulsion Laboratory. President Obama has laid out a bold vision for sending humans to Mars in the mid-2030’s, and today’s landing marks a significant step toward achieving this goal.”

Just wait until the dust settles…

Curiosity landed at 10:32 p.m. PDT Aug. 5, (1:32 a.m. EDT Aug. 6) near the foot of a mountain three miles tall and 96 miles in diameter inside Gale Crater. During a nearly two-year prime mission, the rover will investigate whether the region ever offered conditions favorable for microbial life.

Isn’t your inner Trekkie so excited??

FYI: “As planned, the rover’s early engineering images are lower resolution. Larger color images from other cameras are expected later in the week when the rover’s mast, carrying high-resolution cameras, is deployed. “

How to Get Bronzed Fast (for men)

Wednesday, July 18th, 2012

Get blazed this summer. It’s not just about young females having spectacular sun-kissed skin in the summer time. Believe it or not, women prefer a sun-kissed look on their man too. So in an effort to not disappoint your lady, or lady friend, we’re here to help with some tanning tips. And no, we won’t go tell you to lay in a tanning bed three-five times a week, unless…you want to? But that would be not-so-cool, literally. It’s hot under all those bulbs. We’ll tell you how to get the PERFECT bronzed look in 5 Simple Steps, without the help of UV rays.

Step One

Exfoliate. If you want your spray/lotion tan to go on evenly, you need to make sure you have a clean, freshly exfoliated palate to begin with. Think of creating a painting…you need to prime the canvas first, right?

At least once a week, for the rest of the summer, give your skin a good rub down. And you don’t have to run to the fanciest body store to get a good body scrub.

Homemade Sugar Scrub

Here’s a little homemade recipe:

1) a cup of Raw, organic sugar
2) A tablespoon or two of Vitamin E
3) A few drops of Vanilla extract/or eucalyptus oil/any natural scented oil of your choosing
4) a teaspoon or two of plain scented soap
5) two tablespoons of honey

Step Two

Moisturize.Instead of using your regular lotion, try a Self tanning/Bronzing Lotion. Our favorite is L’Oreal Daily Moisturizer which sells for around $9-$12 dollars a bottle. It gives you a shimmering, natural bronze and smells much better than the Jergen’s brand. It comes in Fair or Medium skin tones, so choose which one best suits your natural skin tone.

Once you dry off completely after your shower, apply this lotion liberally to all areas of your body. WASH YOUR HANDS thoroughly afterwards (and we mean each and every time) so you won’t get orange, wedged fingers.

Step Three

Spray. After you apply lotion you’re set right? Not true! Especially if you want a stellar, natural bronzed look that will get you looking buff at the beach, apply a light mist of spray tan on TOP of the L’Oreal lotion.

Our favorite is Neutrogena’s Micro-mist Sunless Tanning Spray 3 Shades Darker.

The best part about this spray is it requires no rubbing in. Simply stand in the bathroom (preferably with a towel on the floor to prevent slipping and staining) and light spray your entire body. Make sure to keep your arm/spray can in constant motion to prevent blotches. Let dry for five minutes. Dress as usual.

*Note, this spray step is only required a few times a week in conjunction with the daily moisturizing tanning lotion.

Step Four

Moisturize. Yes moisturize AGAIN! The trick to keeping a great spray/bottled tan going is to moisturize. Actually, this is even true for a real sun UV tan too. The skin needs natural moisturizer after being baked all day, in order to keep the cells regenerating. Even if it’s a fake tan, the skin needs to rebuild itself underneath so when that layer fades off, there is a fresh palate underneath to work with. Moisturizing also helps keep your spray tan longer.

Step Five

Get in the sun, just a little bit. To even it all out and get a natural bronzed addition to your new sun soaked skin. Also, the brightness of the sun helps you find out if you missed any spots with the self tanner and if you need extra/less in certain places on your body.

Trying to Beat the Heat in NYC?

Monday, June 25th, 2012

In case you haven’t noticed, there has been a record heat wave going on in New York City. (Also, in case you haven’t noticed, CLM is based out of NY so we’re speaking from the thick of it.) It’s seriously…swampy out there friends.

So how do New Yorkers stay cool? Of course it’s a rarity for anyone to actually have central AC, and those window units spike your electric bill throug

h the roof (where all the heat resides. ‘Cause, you know, heat travels upwards…) Well, turns out there is a reason why there is a Starbucks on every other corner in Manhattan: to save us all from the heat via iced drinks, fraps, and…you guessed it, central AC. Maybe your office AC broke down, maybe it’s still too stuffy at your desk, where to go? You guessed it…Starbucks.

Other ways to stay cool, and we’re not strictly talking temperature here.

Cut Off Shorts:

This look is in for both men and women alike. Take an old pair of jeans, or even new because they will still look awesome, and simply cut where you want them to end. Give yourself a few extra inches because they will ride up once they are on your body and become shorter. This is always true when washing, the frayed ends will make the length rise slightly. It’s better to cut them too long at first, then too short.

The Perfect Sandal (or Mandal)

Unless you have perfect manicured feet, there is no reason for men to wear flipflops. One of the biggest fashion faux pas is a snagged toe foot in a flip flop in the summertime. Don’t be a victim this season. Try something sporty like these Nike slip ons (http://www.zappos.com/nike-solarsoft-slide-black-white?zfcTest=fw:1)

Men's Sandals

Check out this amazing, informative article from Askmen.com: http://www.askmen.com/fashion/fashiontip_400/454b_mens-sandals-dos-donts.html. They give you a complete low down on the DOs and DON’Ts of male sandal wearing…also known as Mandals.

“It can be downright difficult to find a men’s sandal that is both simple and stylish if you want something other than flip-flops. The solution: a cross-strap sandal. There are no bells and whistles here; just two uncomplicated straps to hold your foot in place. It’s also the perfect sandal if you find a traditional flip-flop that slips on between your toes to be uncomfortable. Just be careful not to go with certain faux-leather types or you could risk looking like grandpa at the retirement home.”
