Fall in Love with Fall: 10 Things to Look Forward to This Season

10 Things to Make You Fall for Fall All Over Again

Scarves: Yes, scarves of all kinds. Cashmere, cable knit, chunky, orange/red/yellow/blue/gray and the list goes on and on. There’s nothing like a fall scarf to complete your cool look and add some accent colors to your light jacket or shirt.

Burning Star Scarf, Made in Italy. Wool, silk, cashmere. Burning Star Scarf, Made in Italy. Wool, silk, cashmere.

Boots: Boots were made for walking and that’s just what you should do. Take a long hike on a trail, up by the river, or spend a day walking around the concrete jungle just looking stylish.

Whiskey, manhattan, break out the bitters: Ah, yes. The time has come to break out the 25 year aged whiskey and make yourself a Manhattan. So break out the bitters, wrap yourself in a new scarf, and enjoy the cool, long evenings.

The season premiere of American Horror Story: It feels like years has passed since the last episode of American Horror Story. We’re still loyally hooked, almost a year later, and the scary fun will begin on October 17th. Are you ready?

Doggie Jackets: As much as we like to brush it off as obnoxious, we love seeing those cute little pups in doggie jackets. Sure, they have their own coat straight from God, but why not add a little fall festivity to your dog too? After all, they like a little wrap around scarf too.

More to the imagination: Let’s face it, beautiful sun kissed skin comes peaking out in the summer months and yes, we love it. But we also like to leave a little to the imagination too. Women look sophisticated, alluring, and extra sultry in the fall, and it has nothing to do with a bikini and suntan lotion. What does she have going on under that peacoat, gray tights, and books?

Plaids: We look extra rugged in a nice strapping plaid shirt, plus it reminds us of the great outdoors, roasting things over a fire, Octoberfest beer, and fall parties in Brooklyn.

Beards: Nothing say “I’m a man’s man” like an overgrown burly beard.

Football Season: Jerseys, fantasy football, beer, and ultra-loaded nachos.

Hearty Food: Haven’t you missed those home beef stews, pumpkin and banana bread, warm milk in the evenings with chocolate, and a nice juicy steak with potatoes? It’s all fall food baby.

A Story to Warm Your Heart: Dog Loyalty

Sunday, September 16th, 2012

It was reported a few days ago by  various online news venues that Captain, a German Shepherd in Argentina, has refused to leave the site of his master’s grave, even after six years following his death.

Talk about loyalty and love! His owner, Miguel Guzman, died in 2006, and he still sits guarding over his grave after all these years. Captain originally ran away from home shortly after Miguel’s death and the family did not know where he ran off to. They assumed he was struck by a car or completely lost in the world. Turns out, he made his way to Miguel’s grave, even though he’s never been there before.

As it turns out, little loyal Captain, could somehow sense the exact location of Miguel’s grave. He was taken home by the family, but again he returned in the evening to keep watch over the grave.

Everyone should experience such love and loyalty. And remember dear readers, DOG is GOD spelled backwards. Enjoy this beautiful fall day!

The Lessons Adults Can Learn from Five Children’s Movies

Finding Nemo. The ties between family transcend our own fears and love is superior to life’s challenges. A disability is just that, a disability, but one can always make up for it, and use it to his/her advantage. Plus, once in a while, you’ll run into a Gill figure in your life that will propel you to act out of your comfort zone and encourage you to adventure. Who is your Gill? Who is your Dory?

The Goonies. Outsiders can be cool too, perhaps even cooler than the “cool guys.” The sense of community, adventure, and general commradery in this film is a great lesson for all you jaded adults out there. “Down here it’s out time!” Mikey professes while in the wishing well. Chunk and the Giant dude show us unconditional love and that spirit transcends appearance. Plus you know when you were little you had a crush on Andie…

Lion King. The prophetic, life altering statement: Hakuna Matata. Concept of family rivalry, childhood love and honor, guilt and shame that would put Woody Allen to rest, and the necessity of an inter-cultural community.

Tangled. What you’ll learn: Your parents aren’t always right. Sometimes they are very wrong. Adult vindication, finally! Hair= power. Men should need to climb, etc.

Tootsies Children Dance wear: Children ballet shoes and tap shoes from Leos Dancewear from toddler sizes to older child size 3 and girl dancewear from toddler size 2T to older child size 12

Are You Prepared for Fall?

Sunday, August 5th, 2012

Make the transition into fall run just a tad bit smoother. You have four weeks, gentlemen. Get moving.

Fall Season

Get just a few new accessories. “But which ones?” you ask. Ah, that’s the question. Simply the simple staples…

1. One long sleeve shirt (preferably the kind with buttons on the top so that you can wear it as an under shirt and outdoors on a cool fall morning).

2. New casual boots. Hip, possibly brown, and lace up. Maybe even buy the kind from Aldo that look slightly worn and “broken in.”

3. One new pair of cufflinks. For the transition, of course…

4. One new pair of jeans. Get your denim on. And not the “mom” jeans either, spend a little extra to make sure they are soft, fit you perfectly, and have a slight fade action going on.

5. A new book bag/work bag. Remember the days right before a new school year when your mother would take you to JcPenney, the Mall, or even Sears to pick out your school supplies? You’d always wind up with, at least, one new book bag, new pens/pencils, a lunch box, and shoes. Treat yourself to a “Grown Up” Version of Your School Bag. Enter “The Work Bag.” It’ll make you feel refreshed for the new season and maybe you’ll be excited to tote it to work. If you buy it in the next few weeks, make sure not to wear it until the first cold breaks. Seeing it around your house, looking cozy and waiting for the crisp air, will get you pumped for fall.

6. Dry clean your light jacket. That’s right, take it out of the box in the closet, don’t even bother dusting it off, and drop it off at the closest dry cleaners. It may be in the 90s now, but in a few weeks, you’ll be extra prepared with a nice, clean fall jacket.

How to Get Bronzed Fast (for men)

Wednesday, July 18th, 2012

Get blazed this summer. It’s not just about young females having spectacular sun-kissed skin in the summer time. Believe it or not, women prefer a sun-kissed look on their man too. So in an effort to not disappoint your lady, or lady friend, we’re here to help with some tanning tips. And no, we won’t go tell you to lay in a tanning bed three-five times a week, unless…you want to? But that would be not-so-cool, literally. It’s hot under all those bulbs. We’ll tell you how to get the PERFECT bronzed look in 5 Simple Steps, without the help of UV rays.

Step One

Exfoliate. If you want your spray/lotion tan to go on evenly, you need to make sure you have a clean, freshly exfoliated palate to begin with. Think of creating a painting…you need to prime the canvas first, right?

At least once a week, for the rest of the summer, give your skin a good rub down. And you don’t have to run to the fanciest body store to get a good body scrub.

Homemade Sugar Scrub

Here’s a little homemade recipe:

1) a cup of Raw, organic sugar
2) A tablespoon or two of Vitamin E
3) A few drops of Vanilla extract/or eucalyptus oil/any natural scented oil of your choosing
4) a teaspoon or two of plain scented soap
5) two tablespoons of honey

Step Two

Moisturize.Instead of using your regular lotion, try a Self tanning/Bronzing Lotion. Our favorite is L’Oreal Daily Moisturizer which sells for around $9-$12 dollars a bottle. It gives you a shimmering, natural bronze and smells much better than the Jergen’s brand. It comes in Fair or Medium skin tones, so choose which one best suits your natural skin tone.

Once you dry off completely after your shower, apply this lotion liberally to all areas of your body. WASH YOUR HANDS thoroughly afterwards (and we mean each and every time) so you won’t get orange, wedged fingers.

Step Three

Spray. After you apply lotion you’re set right? Not true! Especially if you want a stellar, natural bronzed look that will get you looking buff at the beach, apply a light mist of spray tan on TOP of the L’Oreal lotion.

Our favorite is Neutrogena’s Micro-mist Sunless Tanning Spray 3 Shades Darker.

The best part about this spray is it requires no rubbing in. Simply stand in the bathroom (preferably with a towel on the floor to prevent slipping and staining) and light spray your entire body. Make sure to keep your arm/spray can in constant motion to prevent blotches. Let dry for five minutes. Dress as usual.

*Note, this spray step is only required a few times a week in conjunction with the daily moisturizing tanning lotion.

Step Four

Moisturize. Yes moisturize AGAIN! The trick to keeping a great spray/bottled tan going is to moisturize. Actually, this is even true for a real sun UV tan too. The skin needs natural moisturizer after being baked all day, in order to keep the cells regenerating. Even if it’s a fake tan, the skin needs to rebuild itself underneath so when that layer fades off, there is a fresh palate underneath to work with. Moisturizing also helps keep your spray tan longer.

Step Five

Get in the sun, just a little bit. To even it all out and get a natural bronzed addition to your new sun soaked skin. Also, the brightness of the sun helps you find out if you missed any spots with the self tanner and if you need extra/less in certain places on your body.
