Our Favorites from Maxim’s Hottest 100 Women

Saturday, May 26th, 2012

Oh yes, it’s that time of year again. Time to scroll through the blazing beauties of 2012, or at least those deemed the most beautiful by Maxim. We’ve hand selected a few just for our audience. Do you agree? Should another woman (or perhaps Stephen Colbert?) make OUR list instead?

Summer is just around the corner. Watch out.

Mila Kunis

Mila Kunis

Birthday: August 14, 1983
Hometown: Chernivtsi, Ukrainian SSR, Soviet Union
Where You’ve Seen Her: Mila Kunis, who, for years, has been on our TVs in hot form (That 70s Show) and cartoon form (Family Guy), has had a big year. The Forgetting Sarah Marshall star dumped Macaulay Culkin, hooked up with Natalie Portman in Black Swan, and accepted an invitation to the Marine Corps Ball in November. Check out the foxy and funny actress in the new film, Friends With Benefits, in theatres today.
Random Fact: Her trademark, according to IMDB, is her different-colored eyes, but we’d say it’s just being pretty damn hot!

Cobie Smulders

Cobie Smulders

Maxim Website says, “Cobie Smulders is not just a pretty face. The How I Met Your Mother star has also got it where it counts—in the funny bone. As babelicious news anchor Robin, Cobie has been going toe-to-toe with comic masterminds like Jason Segel and Neil Patrick Harris for the past six seasons. She makes us laugh, she makes us drool—sometimes at the same time! Now that we’ve finally met Cobie Smulders in person, we won’t stop watching until our TV explodes…or she files a restraining order!
You grew up in Vancouver. Canadians are notoriously polite. Pretend that we’re Canadian. Insult us.
I don’t know if a Canadian would do that!
C’mon! If there were a gun to a Canadian’s head….
First of all, if it were a Canadian, it would be a shotgun, because we have very few handguns. Second of all, I think the word “hoser” would be used, but the Canadian would have to drink lots of beer to slip up like that.”

Lily Collins

Lily CollinsFrom Maxim’s website:

Birthdate: March 18, 1989

Hometown: Guildford, Surrey, England, UK
A quick word before we start this month’s obsession: We’re going to try and get through the following piece without using a single Phil Collins song title, because that’s exactly the kind of dumb, lazy writing we despise. Right—on with the show! So this lovely lady is Lily Collins, daughter of prog rocker turned pop legend Phil, and if you’re sensing electricity “In the Air Tonight” (sorry), you’re not alone: She’s so hot we’d definitely like to have “A Groovy Kind of Love” with her (argh!), either today or “Another Day in Paradise” (sorry, can’t stop!). OK, so the beautiful Lily plays Snow White in this month’s Mirror Mirror (in theatres today), which we can’t wait to be forced to watch with our girlfriends. But, alas, “You Can’t Hurry Love” (damn it!). In conclusion, Lily is awe- some and “Sussudio” (we don’t even know what we’re saying anymore).”

Street Style: March 18th

Sunday, March 18th, 2012

Like every other season, it’s about the little details. Think of a wine tasting…one doesn’t go in and down each and every glass, right? Savor style too. There are more options for men then ever in the realm of fashion and shoes are not to be understated. To go with the rolled pant look, these featured kicks bring a plain tee and jeans to a whole different level. GQ Magazine recently featured these in their March issue and we’d like to bring them to you in case you missed it.

Oh what to say about these! Traditional loafers with a kick (no pun intended…well maybe) transitioned into spring with no socks or at least a no-sock look. The bags in this wonderful photograph also point at the importance of the details in accessories–a woodland inspired plaid bag, a canvas messenger, and again, the rolled jeans. And what about toting your cufflinks? Our brand new Mini Travel box will do the job for under $50.

And don’t forget/be afraid to sprinkle a little white in the mix!

Wow, so this photo may not be the largest/best quality, but the brown shoes with the cropped blue pants are worth taking a look (not to mention his model “friend”). Because black and brown are not friends normally in the fashion world, or at least the high end runway world, this guy pulls off the blue to brown beautifully. Try it.

RED pops of colors! Need we say more? The two look ultra stylish at a cafe, reminiscent of 50s Chicago, mixed with avant-garde Paris, and a little Bronx action in the hat choices.

Rose Gold for Spring 2012

Saturday, March 10th, 2012

The hottest accessory that we are seeing for Spring is anything in Rose Gold. Yup, that’s right, from Alexander Wang’s hardware to Asics GT-II Rose gold kicks, it is positively THE color of the season.

What do the editors of GQ says about this spring trend?  “Mix a little copper into gold and you get its reddish alter ego. Mix a little of that rose gold into your look and you get a sharp, subtle way to break from the precious-metal pack.

As the name implies, rose gold can veer into Dame Judi Dench territory if you’re not careful, so avoid pinker shades and find pieces with an edge—dark-tinted aviators, punked-out chains, and watches with black faces. Shine on if you can spring for the solid-rose-gold Rolex, but remember: If you can’t tell something’s plated, neither can anyone else.”

How can you join in on the fun?

And with all your bling-ed out accessories, why not buy something for the lady too? She’ll adore (we promise) anything from Alexander Wang’s spring collection, completely studded out in rose and brass hardware. It’ll set you back around $1,000 but she’ll be the judge of whether it’s worth it…

And also for your expensive tastes buds to be quenched this season, London based company Tateossian was recently featured in the NY Times. So you’ll be buying “Alexander Wang” quality, if not better, jewelry for a 1/3 of the price. Want a sneak peak of the article? “On a global basis we’re known as a cufflink brand, but in the past year our sales have shifted in a way that we’re selling, now, more bracelets than we are selling cufflinks” online and in Tateossian’s own stores, said Robert Tateossian, the company’s chief executive.

Featured Designer of the Week: Canali

Friday, March 2nd, 2012

While browsing the international runway shows for Fall 2012 fashion week, we came across an interesting, diverse show that propelled us to look. Honestly, we weren’t too familiar with this line of clothing, this particular designer, but we are pleasantly surprised and want to share with you our findings.

The shimmering fabrics used, most likely a form of velvet, would look great with any Gunmetal Cufflink, like this one:

About the Canali Brand: “In 1934, the brothers Giovanni and Giacomo Canali founded a tailoring workshop dedicated to the manufacture of high quality clothing. In the 1950s, with the contributions of the family’s second generation, sales increased. As the firm specialized in fine menswear, its presence began to influence the Italian market. By the mid 1970s, the firm had opened its doors to foreign buyers. Exports consumed 50 percent of the entire Canali production in 1980.”

The thing about this line is the ability to switch up the pieces with others–the tops will go with different bottoms, staple suit jackets that can be paired with jeans, khakis in the spring, and trousers, and a striking, velvety/corduroy pant that has a shimmering gold color we love.

Touches of green seem to be a staple for this Italian company. Accessorize with a pair of light green cufflinks that won’t overpower the look or bring too much attention to your sleeve. Your accessories should complement your overall look, not steal the show. Tateossian’s line of high-end sterling silver cufflinks is known for giving you that elegance, without the excessive bling.

And with all these dark, grey colors that infiltrate the runway for this upcoming fall 2012 season, adding dashes of white to your cuffs will brighten the entire suit, like these Tateossian Hexagonal White Cufflinks. Touches of white in the top front pocket, under shirts, cufflinks, hemlines, and interwoven fabric in accessories like scarves will do the trick.

The Work Bag: Fashion 2012

Tuesday, February 21st, 2012

GQ.com recently featured a collection of must-have bags for fall 2012. But we’re thinking in terms of a more transitional fashion sense, like from winter to spring. Taking inspiration from GQ writer Matthew Sebra, we’re proud to feature the coolest, most functional bags this season (and next). The best part is, the all seem to be made impeccably, and many are classics, ensuring your purchase won’t be short lived.

Here are the Best Bags from New York Fashion Week:

Nothing is better than a beat-up, vintage inspired rucksack (nothing beside, let’s say, cufflinks of course…) This season we’ll be seeing a lot of canvas/wool blends mixed with leather accents. The great thing about this is it keeps the weight of the bag on the lower scale.

Fun, playful, and still latching onto Spring and Summer, these no-hassle, yet elegant, totes from John Bartlett are perfect for the seasonal transition. It came go to the office, as well as the beach, and we love the little details consisting of red and white stripes. Reminds us of our own fun accessory we like to call the Red Mint Cufflink

As we reported in our earlier blog, entitled Three Designers We Adore,” Joseph’s Abboud’s fall collection is stunning. He may even take the prize for NYC Fashion Week’s Best Runway show (in our book anyways). And as always, pair Abboud’s collection with anything from Aymara this fall season. The juxtaposition of light airy Butterfly Cufflinks and sturdy canvas bags will fit the aesthetic season.

Bastian’s collection also made our blog pages last fall, featuring orange James Dean inspired looks. Remember our “Fall Trend Report 2011: Numero Dos”? Now we couldn’t help feature his 70s meets French Decadence inspired bag for this year’s new Fall collection. And pair this decadent bag with these Chainsaw cufflinks:
