How to Get Bronzed Fast (for men)

Wednesday, July 18th, 2012

Get blazed this summer. It’s not just about young females having spectacular sun-kissed skin in the summer time. Believe it or not, women prefer a sun-kissed look on their man too. So in an effort to not disappoint your lady, or lady friend, we’re here to help with some tanning tips. And no, we won’t go tell you to lay in a tanning bed three-five times a week, unless…you want to? But that would be not-so-cool, literally. It’s hot under all those bulbs. We’ll tell you how to get the PERFECT bronzed look in 5 Simple Steps, without the help of UV rays.

Step One

Exfoliate. If you want your spray/lotion tan to go on evenly, you need to make sure you have a clean, freshly exfoliated palate to begin with. Think of creating a painting…you need to prime the canvas first, right?

At least once a week, for the rest of the summer, give your skin a good rub down. And you don’t have to run to the fanciest body store to get a good body scrub.

Homemade Sugar Scrub

Here’s a little homemade recipe:

1) a cup of Raw, organic sugar
2) A tablespoon or two of Vitamin E
3) A few drops of Vanilla extract/or eucalyptus oil/any natural scented oil of your choosing
4) a teaspoon or two of plain scented soap
5) two tablespoons of honey

Step Two

Moisturize.Instead of using your regular lotion, try a Self tanning/Bronzing Lotion. Our favorite is L’Oreal Daily Moisturizer which sells for around $9-$12 dollars a bottle. It gives you a shimmering, natural bronze and smells much better than the Jergen’s brand. It comes in Fair or Medium skin tones, so choose which one best suits your natural skin tone.

Once you dry off completely after your shower, apply this lotion liberally to all areas of your body. WASH YOUR HANDS thoroughly afterwards (and we mean each and every time) so you won’t get orange, wedged fingers.

Step Three

Spray. After you apply lotion you’re set right? Not true! Especially if you want a stellar, natural bronzed look that will get you looking buff at the beach, apply a light mist of spray tan on TOP of the L’Oreal lotion.

Our favorite is Neutrogena’s Micro-mist Sunless Tanning Spray 3 Shades Darker.

The best part about this spray is it requires no rubbing in. Simply stand in the bathroom (preferably with a towel on the floor to prevent slipping and staining) and light spray your entire body. Make sure to keep your arm/spray can in constant motion to prevent blotches. Let dry for five minutes. Dress as usual.

*Note, this spray step is only required a few times a week in conjunction with the daily moisturizing tanning lotion.

Step Four

Moisturize. Yes moisturize AGAIN! The trick to keeping a great spray/bottled tan going is to moisturize. Actually, this is even true for a real sun UV tan too. The skin needs natural moisturizer after being baked all day, in order to keep the cells regenerating. Even if it’s a fake tan, the skin needs to rebuild itself underneath so when that layer fades off, there is a fresh palate underneath to work with. Moisturizing also helps keep your spray tan longer.

Step Five

Get in the sun, just a little bit. To even it all out and get a natural bronzed addition to your new sun soaked skin. Also, the brightness of the sun helps you find out if you missed any spots with the self tanner and if you need extra/less in certain places on your body.

Cool Things to Do TODAY

Create a happy new playlist on itunes. A mixture of slow jams and dance music to take you on a nostalgic ride.

Download at least one song from your childhood. And make it a good one, like something from an 80s film. Or better yet, go out and buy the vinyl album to really take you back.

Clean your bathroom–sounds not so tempting, right? But afterwards, you’ll feel good about yourself and home, knowing that you have a clean place to get clean in.

Call an old friend whom you haven’t spoken with in over one year. That’s right, pick up the phone. Re-kindle…and that’s not a new amazon product.

Give yourself a manicure (even if you’re a gentlemen). This doesn’t mean break out the clear polish men, but sit on the sofa with a file and clippers, and clean up those hands. They are the “second” things people see when they first meet you, after your face of course. It’s good to have freshly groomed hands always, unless you’re a car mechanic who relishes in the grease all day.

Break out the dusty blender in the kitchen and make a fruit smoothie. Add a little extra to it, like cocoa powder for extra “comfort.” It’s healthy, energizing, and is a great substitute for a fast food meal.

Add a drop of whiskey to your coffee. Just because it’s Thursday.

Visit the humane society and play with the dogs. All dogs go to heaven they say and they remember you for coming to play with them. These little guys and gals rarely get extra love and attention, so why not take a trip to your local shelter and give a couple of canines rub downs.

These dogs weren’t born with a silver treat in their mouths…:(

ANTIQUE HAND PAINTED PUG CUFFLINKSSmile at a stranger. Just one…or ten. Enough so that people still know you’re normal and not some creepy stalker guy ogling all the innocent bystanders. Kind of like it pass it forward kind of smile…not bozo the clown kind of smile.

Do 25 crunches. Hey, we’re not saying to 100. 25 will get those muscles working just enough to set off some happy endorphines in your brain and maybe even motivate you to do more.

Laguna Lodge
Lake Atitlán, Guatemala

Laguna Lodge Lake Atitlán, GuatemalaGQ featured this get-away on their website, with a personal account from a pair of newly weds: “After the insanity of our wedding, which happened to fall just after New York Fashion Week, my wife and I were ready to flee the city. For our honeymoon, we holed up in this seven-bedroom eco-lodge on Lake Atitlán in Guatemala. Everything about the place is straight out of a dream. Our room was right on the lake, with a view of the three volcanoes to the south, and all you had to do was walk down a few steps to dangle your feet in the water…”

…We’d wake up in the morning as the sun came up and have breakfast alone on the veranda. The coffee—which they grow locally—was the smoothest and richest I’ve ever had. At night, when the buzz had finally worn off, we’d have drinks on the dock or at the lakeside bar and watch the most surreal sunsets I’ve ever seen—pink and vivid and misty—as the sun dropped behind the tops of the volcanoes. But the real magic is that the rooms are completely off the grid: no TV, no Internet, no buzzing from your BlackBerry. It’s just you and her—exactly how it should be.”

The official Laguna Lodge on Lake Atitlan’s webstie says the grounds feature large cliffs and ancient Mayan ceremonial rocks. Organic coffee is grown on the land and is served in the lodge. Swimming is safe, as well as canoeing, kayaking, and snorkeling. Nature trails are all around the property as well.
They feature a Hummingbird Spa, which is situation approx. 1,500 feet above sea level. They offer a wide selection of services, ranging from hot stone massages, reflexology, a spa pool, juice therapy, and meditation.  And they use pure essential and organic oils in their products…
The Zotz restaurant, The Lava Bar, a Yoga pavilion, and personal boat transfers are just some of the accommodations they provide. Luxury Travel Magazine says”The luxury and deluxe suites are individually furnished with king beds, fine linens, intricate woven textiles, rustic indigenous antiques and garnished with freshly cut flowers. Large balconies overlook the lake with panoramic views to the towering volcanoes. Welcome macadamia nut chocolates and unlimited drinking water are provided. The mini bar has organic wine and locally made chocolates and nuts. The En-Suites feature Guatemalan green marble, double artisan basins, botanical toiletries, oversized towels and bath robes.” Mmm…sounds good to us.
Some features of the hotel? Luxury Magazine provides details: “Maya Kaqchikel with ancestral pride, unique charm and a gentle hospitable manner are eager to present their service skills to you. The highlands are rich in indigenous tradition and culture, so as is their custom our female staff wear traditional dress. The lodge has archeological displays of ceramic, stone, obsidian, and jade artifacts from the lake basin.”

Grey Daze: New York Fashion Week 2012

Saturday, February 11th, 2012

The most popular color on the runway for New York fashion week? Take one guess. We’ve always had this theory that fashion mirrors political/social consciousness and we, as a nation that is, are in a grey zone. But that is nothing to fret about because stylistically these looks are positively stunning. Take these three fashion mongols (dictators of the fashion realm, pioneers, Gods of Wardrobe, whatever you want to call them): Alexander McQueen, Burberry, and Emporio Armani.

Let’s take little Alex’s new looks. Bless his soul, his runway dreams are still magical. With the physical help and design aesthetic of Sarah Burton, the end result for Fall is a grey dapper, dandy, old school English aura:
Alexander McQueen, Fall 2012Alexander McQueen, Fall 2012

Pair these Alexander McQueen looks with a Black and Grey Silk tie, like this one from Daniel Dolce:

Black and Grey Circles, 100% Italian Silk

It’s obvious that 90s fashion has long left us–we’ve swapped the oversized pants and greasy looks for tailored, exquisite suits, cropped pants, and long socks.

Next up we have the ultimate suit designer, Armani. GQ Magazine reports:

The Vibe for Fall 2012
This is a collection for the urban pioneer: a layered look with duster coats resting loosely over flannel suiting or draped knits, and topped with a felt fedora. Mr. Armani moves away from the futurism that has punctuated recent collections and focuses instead on soft tailoring, the cornerstone of the Armani aesthetic.

And finally, the champion of three, Burberry brings in a grey masterpiece, slightly similar to McQueen’s runway looks. GQ magazine reports: “A gray scale—that’s how Christopher Bailey weighed his collection this season. Using a series of refined two- and three-button wool gray suits in deepening shades, he’s updated the Gregory Peck look with colorful, textured splashes—Navajo-inspired patterns, bags in maroon and navy suede, mustard-tipped trenches, and watch out for the owl and cat-face bundle-necked sweaters. This is where trad meets mod.” And yes, it breeches the line and teeters between traditional and ultra modern. Love.
