What To Remember When Going Out On NYE

Thursday, December 29th, 2011

1. Make Reservations. This can be for a table at a restaurant, bar, night club, or a roof top. Just make sure you put your name or names down on a list somewhere so you don’t have to wait in extra lines, you can avoid the tourists traps, and getting a seat and waiter will be ten times easier.

2. Pick a drink (or a type of alcohol) and stick with it for the whole night. If you’re craving a martini, try to stick with vodka the whole night, be it cosmos, citrus vodka with ginger ale, vanilla vodka and coca cola–you get the point. If it’s Whiskey or Gin, stick with that. The only exception is beer, wine or champagne in the early night. You can always mix with those!

3. Decide who you’re going out with beforehand. It makes it so much easier on your stress and partying levels if you decide your “crew” beforehand. Then you won’t be wasting time texting and calling people trying to see what “everyone’s” doing.

4. Make dinner plans or plan a dinner party. Put together a group list, set up a festive NYE menu filled with lots of champagne, (have everyone bring a bottle too), pick up some streamers and party hats like you’re back in grade school, and have a nice grown up dinner. Then get a cab together and go wild on the streets.U Of California Bears Cufflinks And Money Clip Gift SetCalifornia Bears Cufflinks

5. Be firm about plans. Others will follow. Everyone waits until the last minute to decide what they’re going to do on the “First Day of the Year.” Make it worth it.

6. Plan your outfit. There’s nothing worse than someone inviting you somewhere ultra exclusive on NYE only to realize two hours before that 1. you have nothing to wear 2. you have nothing clean to wear. Ladies, splurge a little with your Christmas bonuses and buy yourself a shiny cocktail dress. Men, get some festive new cufflinks to go with a classy top hat. You won’t regret looking the best at the party.

Sorel Black Snow Boot

GQ Says: “Sorel boots have been around for ages and everyone clomps around in them in the slush. They’re typically fur-lined, brown, and extremely utilitarian. But when I saw them in all-black and lined in plaid, I thought, That’s the stealth boot of the season. I’m not advocating walking around the office in them in a suit, but I think we all need a bit of style when it’s raining. Even when boots are in style, they can look strictly weekend. But these are chic and simple.”

Made from supersoft, luxurious Italian cashmere in a 12-gauge knit from a world-famous mill. V-neck. Other colors like aqua and purple available form Jcrew.com

Why Looks Do Matter

Sunday, November 27th, 2011

According to a recent University study, women actually notice and subconsciously seek out well-dressed, stylish men. The reason? Men that are “put together” on the outside means that they are more likely to put food on the table. Women are, biologically programmed, to find the strongest mate, and yes fashion has it’s aesthetic hand in the mating game.

Joshua Linam, a New York City-based freelance journalist, recently said in Askmen.com:

“In one university study, women rated the attractiveness of one man dressed in several different getups. Outfits ranged from a designer suit and tricked-out watch all the way down to a lowly fast-food uniform. As you can imagine, ladies preferred the power suit to the burger-flipping one. But it’s why they chose the businessman that’s important.

The study notes that girls actively sought signs of “status” when judging the man’s clothes, and they liked that look better because it suggested a good provider. In other words, women do care what you wear, and this is why looks matter. Girls favor a put-together guy because it’s likelier he can put food on the table…..Clothes can be a tool to boost your standing with the opposite sex, but what kind of style should you be channeling? Fortunately, you don’t have to be a billionaire to win a lady’s hand. More realistically, you just have to nail the right details.

The goods you need to command a girl’s attention: A quality timepiece, a fitted (though not necessarily designer) suit, a well-polished pair of oxfords or boots, and a crisp button-down shirt. Equipped with these style essentials, you can scientifically increase your chances with women. (Note: Unless you respond to the name Jay-Z, never “over-bling” yourself. The risk of looking like a Christmas ornament stands too great.”

So with that said, here are some ultra-hipster looks, and we mean that in a good way, to start of the holiday season just right. You don’t want to end up at a Christmas Party wearing the wrong thing, do you? Only to let that other wanna-be ask your should-be lady out for drinks the next day? We didn’t think so.

Start with the right sweater. Women love a guy who is comfortable wearing a “cheesy” grandpa sweater. It screams confidence, not Screech from Saved By The Bell. Dress it up with nice jeans and shoes (see our other blog articles for that). Maybe some glasses to add the right touch. This Green Cardigan Sweater from Urban Outfitters does the job:

Pair it with a confidently festive Christmas Tree Cufflink to add a fun feel to the winter work day suit!

The Classic V-Neck Shirt for underneath said sweater. This super soft cotton T from The Gap is just one example. If $16 is too much to splurge on a single T-shirt, the regular Hanes packaged-white and grey ones will do just fine. Just remember, the softer the better–and the price of cotton, unfortunately, is rising.

These Renegade Wash 1969 Original Fit (Or Slim) Gap Jeans go well with both the sweater and blazer above:

You can’t leave home without altra hipster briefcase. It would just be, a crime. So to assuage this crime, try these Vintage Briefcases from Urban Outfitters, priced from $175.

Vintage Men's Leather Briefcase Online Only $175.00

Washed Khakis are in for just about any working guy this season. And “working guy” is in this season, especially with all the lay-offs. Gap, yet again, features a perfect pant. Secret: Gap.com carried literally every size you can imagine. Can’t find your size at the local Gap? Go online:

1969 denim-washed khaki (slim fit) from The Gap, $59

Pair the very “in” rustic, forest-chic look with a designer Enamel Bear Cufflinks for only $50:

And if the Vintage Briefcase is too much for your taste, (don’t worry we don’t judge around here, we just give solutions) take a look at this Pendleton Ombre messenger bag from Urban. We think it is winter hip, chic, and robust:

Call Me Mr. Brightside

Tuesday, November 22nd, 2011

Winter comes and the colors get duller. Why not bring a fresh breath of spring with you during the dull winter days? Yellow is not just for happening April evenings, lost in meadows of sunny mirth! Added (in splashes) to your dark and foreboding winter wear will make everything pop. Think brown and yellow, blue and yellow, grey and yellow, black and yellow…etc. You get the point.

Remember, think SPLASHES. Not full ensembles.

During the dreary days, spice up your black/blue/grey formal wear with this Italian Yellow Sun Silk Neck Tie. You can even dress down this tie by wearing it with a casual shirt and blue pants/jeans, like this Street Style feature on GQ (see below). The juxtaposition between the yellow/mustard pants with a blue top is hot right now. Get funky if you feel it.

Another way to rock yellow in your ensemble is to use cufflinks. This Aymara Yellow Lion’s Paw Butterfly Cufflink pair will look great with a brown or black suit. It will add just the appropriate amount of color to not blind spectators and throw off the visual scale of your colleagues.

These new suits from JCrew are the perfect back drop for this kind of fashion. GQ Editor’s Choice article explains: “The two suits shown with the washed pastel shirts.”—Ted Stafford, GQ European market editor

“The slim gray cotton suit with a washed pale yellow shirt and a striped knit tie—and a Jim Nelson favorite as well!”—Brian Coats, GQ senior fashion and market editor

“There was a pale gray suit with an electric, almost lemon-colored oxford shirt that I will almost certainly own.”—Sean Fennessey, GQ multimedia content editor

And don’t forget the old fashioned pocket square. They never go out of style and have a function: wipe your chin, nose, hands, lady’s tears. Choose a color that will pop against a solid suit color, like this Creamsicle Paisley Silk Pocket Square:

And for the bolder types out there, don’t be afraid to try a yellow blazer like this one recently featured on the runway from the Parke & Ronen Collection Spring 2012 collection:

Lastly, these Aymara Yellow Butterfly Cufflinks are the perfect medium between extremes: light colored, simple, detailed, and organic! Plus any of the Aymara Butterfly Cufflinks support a Peruvian Butterfly farm, committed to protecting and raising exotic butterflies. Look good and give back to nature. We’ll donate 10% to the farm with your purchase:
