Guide to Gift Giving

According to Hallmark (and your wife), it’s never too early to start looking for Valentine’s Day presents. And we all know men aren’t the greatest shoppers anyways–it’s against the evolutionary biological standard for men. But CLM is here, once again, to help you pry through the masses of gifts and pick the right one for your lady friend.

First, pick which “type” your lady embodies. No, we don’t like putting anyone in categories, but for this shopping effort on Valentine’s we will make an exception.

Is she Glitzy? Designer? Earthy? or Romantic?

Pick ONE or TWO:

For the Glitzy Lady:

Get her something that sparkles, it’s a no brainer. Every woman has her favorite jewelry staple, be it necklaces, rings, bracelets, earrings, or a mix of everything. Have a custom ring or necklace made for her, it doesn’t have to be an engagement ring, but if your serious, then maybe some kind of “promise” ring. Yes we’re taking it back old school. Good Old Mr. Hallmark forces us to! Forgive us please!

But really, don’t just go to the local department store and grab anything that sparkles. Put some kind of thought into it…meaning go to a local jeweler and actually design something. It could be in Sterling Silver or Platinum, add a few semi-precious stones and you have a one of a kind ring, necklace, or bracelet to give her. The trick is, you don’t want to fall into that “Kay Jewelers or Jared’s” trap that says she should have the same necklace and ring as every other woman in America. Put your mind and money together to create something beautiful.

Is she a Stunning Love Knot kind of gal?

For the Designer Lady:

A handbag. A watch. Anything by her favorite designer that she can use on the regular and be reminded of your love (and money). They go hand in hand, do they not? Hey V-Day can be kind of cut throat for the unemployed and taken. Take notice of the brand names she loves…is it Chanel? Micheal Kors? Coach? Valentino? Chanel lipstick with Chanel perfume is a start. A MK handbag and watch is another. A wallet and handbag from Coach is yet another.

Maybe surprise her and take her to her favorite designer store (or Barney’s/Saks/etc) and have her pick out what she wants. It’s not as romantic, but hey, if she loves labels let her pick it. If you pick it yourself, think about her style and figure out what will work with what she already owns: i.e. don’t buy her a gold watch if she only wears silver. Don’t buy her a Louis Vuitton bag if she can’t stand the idea of LV all over an item. Also shoes are another way to win her V Day affection: does she love new heels? How about some sparkly Jimmy Choos to wear to the restaurant you’ll be taking her.

Also, if you decide to go designer, don’t buy your gift from ebay or second hand. It’s just not the same, especially for Valentine’s Day.

For the Earthy Lady:

A hemp/eco friendly rucksack. A natural leather bag that will last a lifetime. A simple jewelry piece with silver and stone. An engraved keepsake, like jewelry box or monogrammed bag. Think of her interests…does she like to be cozy and comfortable? Get her plush winter boots from LL Bean. Does she like Mountain climbing? An insulated good quality jacket. Love tea? How about a clay tea pot with engraved cups?

A day trip or overnight stay in a log cabin overlooking a lake. A camping trip. A bed and breakfast in the mountains. Your lady will surely love it if you take her away for the weekend somewhere outdoors and romantic, get her a nice climbing/hiking bag made from Bison leather,  and a classic tea pot to brew some love by the fire.

Is your Irish love all knotted up?

For the Romantic Lady:

Write her a song. Make her a jewelry box out of pine wood, engraved with your favorite quote. Flowers, but not just traditional roses, give her something different that will become her new “favorite flower.” Simple jewelry. Dinner over candlelight. Soft music playing. Chocolates. Framed picture of the two of you on a special trip or day. A photo book with pictures recounting your memories together. Take her to a lake side resort, catch your own fish, and cook it for dinner together. Buy her her favorite romantic movie and watch it together. A basket of dainty things: perfume, garter stockings, monogrammed handkerchiefs, silver earrings, a love note, massage oil, and candies.
