Rose Gold for Spring 2012

Posted March 10, 2012 By Mila Smith

The hottest accessory that we are seeing for Spring is anything in Rose Gold. Yup, that’s right, from Alexander Wang’s hardware to Asics GT-II Rose gold kicks, it is positively THE color of the season.

What do the editors of GQ says about this spring trend?  “Mix a little copper into gold and you get its reddish alter ego. Mix a little of that rose gold into your look and you get a sharp, subtle way to break from the precious-metal pack.

As the name implies, rose gold can veer into Dame Judi Dench territory if you’re not careful, so avoid pinker shades and find pieces with an edge—dark-tinted aviators, punked-out chains, and watches with black faces. Shine on if you can spring for the solid-rose-gold Rolex, but remember: If you can’t tell something’s plated, neither can anyone else.”

How can you join in on the fun?

And with all your bling-ed out accessories, why not buy something for the lady too? She’ll adore (we promise) anything from Alexander Wang’s spring collection, completely studded out in rose and brass hardware. It’ll set you back around $1,000 but she’ll be the judge of whether it’s worth it…

And also for your expensive tastes buds to be quenched this season, London based company Tateossian was recently featured in the NY Times. So you’ll be buying “Alexander Wang” quality, if not better, jewelry for a 1/3 of the price. Want a sneak peak of the article? “On a global basis we’re known as a cufflink brand, but in the past year our sales have shifted in a way that we’re selling, now, more bracelets than we are selling cufflinks” online and in Tateossian’s own stores, said Robert Tateossian, the company’s chief executive.

The Graduate

Posted March 5, 2012 By Mila Smith

The Graduate is a 1967 American comedy-drama motion picture directed by Mike Nichols.[1] It is based on the 1963 novel The Graduate by Charles Webb, who wrote it shortly after graduating from Williams College. The screenplay was by Buck Henry, who makes a cameo appearance as a hotel clerk, and Calder Willingham. The film tells the story of Benjamin Braddock (played by Dustin Hoffman), a recent university graduate with no well-defined aim in life, who is seduced by an older woman, Mrs. Robinson (Anne Bancroft), and then proceeds to fall in love with her daughter Elaine (Katharine Ross).

In 1996, The Graduate was selected for preservation in the U.S. National Film Registry as being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant”. Initially, the film was placed at #7 on AFI’s 100 Years… 100 Movies list in 1998. However, when AFI revised the list in 2007, the film was moved to #17.

Mrs. Robinson and Benjamin

Of course we all remember luscious Mrs. Robinson and coy, nervous Benjamin. But what about the fashion? Mrs. Robinson truly represents the 60s with her gartered stockings, leopard print coat, loose up-do, and heavy black liner. Benjamin goes for the sophisticate look, with his collared shirts, wool jackets, and cufflinks, like this classic Tuxedo set:

Spring Accesories

Spring Showers are coming soon, so be prepared folks. What are some cool ways to accessorize for the rain and light breezes that March and April will bring? First off, rain puddles are reason enough to buy these Hunter Bennie Boots for Men. Averaging at about $150, these super sturdy, fashionable Wellie books are comfortable and can be cleaned with basic Armor All (you know, the stuff for your car?)

Tommy Hilfiger has just the right colors in their Spring 2012 line to brighten up the day. Try their classic baby blue collared shirts with red pants. Yes, we love this look, with all that dismal grey for winter, the time has come for some popping color. It’ll add to the overall solid-dark based ensemble for the spring.

And also for those rainy days, don’t forget your classic trench. This differs from your winter coat because it lacks the heavy winter lining and thick/heavy materials. Think light this spring. Just because there’s a monsoon outside from all the rain doesn’t mean you have to wear yourself down…

And of course don’t forget about your shirt sleeves. Spring’s red carpet rolls out brilliant yellows and textured neutrals. Aymara brings these two concepts together by combining a part of Mother Nature (literally, they are butterfly wings) with Sterling Silver to bring you an exotic spring accessory.

And for the chilly evenings, try a lighter scarf than your normal winter wear–like this Silk Scarf by Daniel Dolce. Warm enough to shield the night breezes, but light enough to keep you cool. Made, of course, from 100% silk from Italy…ahh…

And add an Air creature to your accessory list as well: these Dragon Fly cufflinks are reminiscent of long summer nights, lightening bugs, and backyard pool parties. Bring these will you to any event and to the office this season, while you dream of the dawning of Spring Break..

Featured Designer of the Week: Canali

Posted March 2, 2012 By Mila Smith

While browsing the international runway shows for Fall 2012 fashion week, we came across an interesting, diverse show that propelled us to look. Honestly, we weren’t too familiar with this line of clothing, this particular designer, but we are pleasantly surprised and want to share with you our findings.

The shimmering fabrics used, most likely a form of velvet, would look great with any Gunmetal Cufflink, like this one:

About the Canali Brand: “In 1934, the brothers Giovanni and Giacomo Canali founded a tailoring workshop dedicated to the manufacture of high quality clothing. In the 1950s, with the contributions of the family’s second generation, sales increased. As the firm specialized in fine menswear, its presence began to influence the Italian market. By the mid 1970s, the firm had opened its doors to foreign buyers. Exports consumed 50 percent of the entire Canali production in 1980.”

The thing about this line is the ability to switch up the pieces with others–the tops will go with different bottoms, staple suit jackets that can be paired with jeans, khakis in the spring, and trousers, and a striking, velvety/corduroy pant that has a shimmering gold color we love.

Touches of green seem to be a staple for this Italian company. Accessorize with a pair of light green cufflinks that won’t overpower the look or bring too much attention to your sleeve. Your accessories should complement your overall look, not steal the show. Tateossian’s line of high-end sterling silver cufflinks is known for giving you that elegance, without the excessive bling.

And with all these dark, grey colors that infiltrate the runway for this upcoming fall 2012 season, adding dashes of white to your cuffs will brighten the entire suit, like these Tateossian Hexagonal White Cufflinks. Touches of white in the top front pocket, under shirts, cufflinks, hemlines, and interwoven fabric in accessories like scarves will do the trick.

Laguna Lodge Lake Atitlán, GuatemalaGQ featured this get-away on their website, with a personal account from a pair of newly weds: “After the insanity of our wedding, which happened to fall just after New York Fashion Week, my wife and I were ready to flee the city. For our honeymoon, we holed up in this seven-bedroom eco-lodge on Lake Atitlán in Guatemala. Everything about the place is straight out of a dream. Our room was right on the lake, with a view of the three volcanoes to the south, and all you had to do was walk down a few steps to dangle your feet in the water…”

…We’d wake up in the morning as the sun came up and have breakfast alone on the veranda. The coffee—which they grow locally—was the smoothest and richest I’ve ever had. At night, when the buzz had finally worn off, we’d have drinks on the dock or at the lakeside bar and watch the most surreal sunsets I’ve ever seen—pink and vivid and misty—as the sun dropped behind the tops of the volcanoes. But the real magic is that the rooms are completely off the grid: no TV, no Internet, no buzzing from your BlackBerry. It’s just you and her—exactly how it should be.”

The official Laguna Lodge on Lake Atitlan’s webstie says the grounds feature large cliffs and ancient Mayan ceremonial rocks. Organic coffee is grown on the land and is served in the lodge. Swimming is safe, as well as canoeing, kayaking, and snorkeling. Nature trails are all around the property as well.
They feature a Hummingbird Spa, which is situation approx. 1,500 feet above sea level. They offer a wide selection of services, ranging from hot stone massages, reflexology, a spa pool, juice therapy, and meditation.  And they use pure essential and organic oils in their products…
The Zotz restaurant, The Lava Bar, a Yoga pavilion, and personal boat transfers are just some of the accommodations they provide. Luxury Travel Magazine says”The luxury and deluxe suites are individually furnished with king beds, fine linens, intricate woven textiles, rustic indigenous antiques and garnished with freshly cut flowers. Large balconies overlook the lake with panoramic views to the towering volcanoes. Welcome macadamia nut chocolates and unlimited drinking water are provided. The mini bar has organic wine and locally made chocolates and nuts. The En-Suites feature Guatemalan green marble, double artisan basins, botanical toiletries, oversized towels and bath robes.” Mmm…sounds good to us.
Some features of the hotel? Luxury Magazine provides details: “Maya Kaqchikel with ancestral pride, unique charm and a gentle hospitable manner are eager to present their service skills to you. The highlands are rich in indigenous tradition and culture, so as is their custom our female staff wear traditional dress. The lodge has archeological displays of ceramic, stone, obsidian, and jade artifacts from the lake basin.”
