The best ways to keep your skin feeling fresh during this brittle winter season

By Amber Snider

What’s the first thing that happens to your body when the temperature drops? Get your mind out of the gutter, really, we’re just talking about your skin. You feel the cold, and your skin takes a beating because of it. Moisturize your body’s largest organ properly throughout the winter via the following: serious water intake, good daily moisturizer, and yes, a nightly cream. (yes, it’s time to take care of your skin via that nightly cream, especially if you’re over 35.  You’ll thank us come…Friday?)

So now that you’re “with” us on this, I’m sure you’re wondering: But how do I do that exactly? What’s your best, professional advice to keeping my skin aglow, happy, and ultra-fashionable. Any tips for brands and remedies?

Well now that you asked, sure. That’s what we’re here for! 🙂 That way you don’t have to go asking your girlfriend which is the proper gentle day cream with SPF for under $20 bucks? Or the best winter (or all-season) cleanser? Look no further, Cufflinksman is back and we don’t legally endorse any of the products except our own, so you know it’s from the heart.

1. Daily Moisturizer

Wake up, brush the dentes, and then what? Moisturize. It’s important this dry season, with the bitter cold hitting our precious skin each time we open a shop door or go out for coffee, to put on a daily “something” lotion on your face.  Try something simple at your local Rite Aid, Duane Reade, etc, like this Cerave Moisturizer for under $15.

2. Some Other Stuff like that, but even old-schooler:

Old-school celebrities and movie stars swear by this stuff. It’s been around since your grandmother (we almost guarantee that). It’s under $5 and worth every penny. Plus how is it always “cold” and thereby refreshing? Humans..

3. Body Wash with Moisturizer

Yes, body wash with moisturizer. Look for it by name on any bottle, preferably with Shea Butter, Vitamin E, Aloe, and Green Tea Essentials. And go by MY rule: Scrub in the tub what you would eat for grub. Meaning, if it’s not edible, don’t go putting it all over your skin either. Your grandmother will thank us later for that too.

4. Weekly Scrub

If the apricot scrub at the local drug store isn’t your thing, try making your own:

Cup of coarse salt/sugar, vitamin E drops, olive oil, liquid soap, vanilla extract, water, and any other essential oil you like. Add a bow around a mason jar and pour, there you have it!

5. Nails: Hand Cream

Hands, next to the eyes/ face/ teeth, your hands are the other next things people notice immediately. Make sure your nails are well-groomed this winter with a few cuticle treatments a month. No, you don’t have to go get pampered at your local Nail Salon, but can use an array of regular items around your house. If you don’t have a lady friend in your close vicinity to ask for hers, go for the olive oil in your kitchen. Smooth on just a little on each fingertip and push the cuticle down with your other nail/finger. It will work just the same–it’s the “bro way.” But if you’re out of olive oil too, plus a girlfriend, then go for Burt’s Bee stuff:

Burts Bees

Burt’s Bees  little greasy and it doesn’t have multiple functions, but still good and inexpensive.

6. Foot Cream (yes! We’ll tell you why…)

Your feet harbor so much moisture while tucked inside your boots all day, which causes bacteria to form. Especially with those (possibly multiple) layers of socks, your feet suffer severe an overload of moisture followed by extreme cold. After washing with body scrub, rub thick hand/foot cream onto your feet, followed by a dose of the talic powder. These helps your “refresh” at the end of the day and retain the “healthy” moisture they need.

Be attentive. That means open the door for her, tie her shoes when they come undone, notice when her wine glass needs a refill, rub her back after a long day. Be attentive to her everyday needs, it doesn’t have to be grand gestures and affirmations of devotion.

Have manners. No one wants to take out a guy with horrible manners. That means, no chewing with your mouth open, no excessive burping, general nastiness when it comes to the delicate art of eating.

Love and Kisses Stamp Cufflinks

Romantic Gestures. Here’s where the tricky stuff comes into play or actual premeditated thought is needed. Take her out to a candle lit dinner, feed her sushi by hand in public, carry her over a puddle. You know, that Casablanca kind of stuff.

Compliments (Honest ones). Not like “your body is more banging than Kim K.’s…” No, we know this is not true and we’re okay with this. Start with the little honest things, like I have the way your smile curves to the left, I like the way that dress looks on you today, you hair is quite elegant tonight, etc. etc. Or simply look into her eyes and say “You. Are. Beautiful.”

Protect Her. These natural instincts to protect and defend your lady are key to chivalry. Defend her in public, stand up to the guy who is making obscene gestures to her on the street, and chastise your frieds for making crude remarks in her presence. These little things will mean the world to her and will not go unnoticed.

A Day in the Life of a Cufflink

Our Guest Speaker: Mr. Gold Stud Cufflink

Gold Knot Cufflinks

Cost:$84.95

Ever wonder what your cufflinks are thinking? What if they could talk? What would those tiny little accessories say to you? What would they say about themselves? We recently scored an exclusive interview with one of our long-lost cufflinks, who was sold a few years ago to a now-famous cigar-smoking billionaire. His subsequent cufflink set, that is, Mr. Gold Stud Cufflink, arose during our client’s rise to fame, and that is precisely why he was willing to open up and tell us what a day in the life is really life…

Say what?!?! Mr. Gold Stud Cufflink

6:30am: Beat out Mr. Royal Blue Stripes today. Ha! That’s five times this month I got picked over him. Boy will he be mad at the end of the night. So much for “blue is always in style…” What a lame-o.

Royal Blue Stripes Cufflinks

Poor Mr. Royal Blue Stripes. Ha.

His price: $49.95

7am: Got a nice water drizzle from the sink when Mr. Fashionable was brushing his teeth. Hey, it’s alright I’m made of pure gold anyway…well. Not really pure solid gold, but at least I’m gold pated. Right? Guys? Back there in the jewelry box?

9:30am: Cool, no rust stains from the tooth-brush water drizzle action. Must be because I’m made from the best! 🙂 Thanks Cufflinksman.

11am: I know I look good and all but I’m not getting enough attention from these other dudes. Business meetings don’t do much for my confidence. We’ll see how the afternoon goes…

2pm: Still shining! All day, everyday baby.

2:15pm: Ran into a sweet looking, shiny Ms. Pink Lady Cufflinks in the hallway today. Wowza! Does she have style…I wish I had mother of pearl accents on my belly too. She makes my Torpedo back Closure tremble…

Pink Mother of Pearl Cufflinks

Mmm…Ms. Pink Mother of Pearl Cufflinks, come on over to Mr. Stud!

5pm: Spaghetti sauce dribbled on my frontal etchings. It’s okay though, as long as he wipes me off…

5:20pm: Still haven’t been wiped off…

5:45pm: Smelling like spaghetti…

Thanks Italy for your sauce…

6pm: Looks like I’m going home with sauce on me. Ah well, the night’s still young!

7pm: Scraped my face a little on the bar stool, but other than that I’m good. Ran into a rather snobby “Trust me, I’m a Doctor” Cufflink. I think he thought he was better than me, but, I know I cost more, so…little does he know. He’s probably not even a doctor.

9pm: <3 Thinking about Ms. Pink Lady Cufflinks. <3

10pm: Ready to go home. C’est la vie in a day in the life. Mr. Fashionable is talking about baseball with a guy wearing a Yankees Cufflink Set. This could quite possibly go on all night…

NY Yankees Cufflinks

Who does he think he is? Little does he know, I like the Mets!

11:12pm: Back home, back in my box. The other cufflinks are super jealous. Loving life, got my bling on and the spaghetti sauce was eventually wiped off. Another day, another shirt.

Stay Fresh This Summer

Tuesday, July 24th, 2012

We all need a little advice once in a while. Here are CLM’s 7 Tips to Keeping you Fresh this Summer…

1. Maintain an even skin tone. Remember our previous post about the perfect bronzed look? That’s right, not only do you have to keep the skin clear and clog-free from dirt and daily grime, but try to maintain a summer glow too. If you haven’t read it yet, click here for 5 Simple Steps to maintaining an all-over glow year round.

2. During hot summer’s mid-day heat, it’s important to change your shirt twice a day. You came here to find out about the rules of staying fresh, right? Adhere to this rule gentlemen.

Red Fire Engine CufflinksFeeling extra hot and bothered? Let your accessories say the say thing, try our Red Fire Engine Cufflinks for an added spark.

3. Never wear faded, colored tee-shirts or collared shirts (white is even worse!) If you like particular brand of shirt or a color, buy it in bulk. Don’t over wear your favorite tee shirt just because you can’t get enough of its softness/style. Buy three, of the same kind. And then throw it out when it becomes dingy or over-washed. For extra style points, try our Pink Collared Cufflinks.

4. Ditch the sneakers in 90 degree weather. Or even 80 degree weather for that matter. Nothing is quite worse than seeing a man walking around in the mid day heat with a pair of hot, sticky sneakers on. Get yourself a nice pair of sandals and spend the $30 on a pedicure to make sure your staying on top of your “fresh” game. Even the horses don’t completely cover their hooves, so why should you?

5. Exfoliate… like your feet too. This step goes perfectly with advice number one and four and is actually an indispensable rule. Follow it.

6. Regular haircuts. Don’t wait until you look like a cave man to make a regular trip to your barber. If you can’t get seen by that “special” hair stylist whenever you want, make sure you have a back-up hair stylist. It does a world of difference for your overall fashion effect if you take the time to trim those locks on the regular.

7. And finally, STAY HYDRATED. In these hot summer months, it’s important to drink as much water as possible. You can’t really over-hydrate. Okay, you can but it’s actually really hard to do. Keep your skin fresh and clear, your eyes bright and cheery, and make sure your energy can beat the heat.

5 Ways to Get the Girl

Certain Things Women Can’t Resist

We’ve all heard the saying “nice guys finish last” and that can be true…if you’re a push-over. Women don’t want men who are passively sweet and timid about their affections. So what do women really want? They want a bold “nice guy” who isn’t afraid of rejection, who will go to “bad boy” lengths to get the girl.

What does that even mean? Check it:

What Women Want

Go to Great Lengths to get her. And we don’t mean inches.

So she lives in another state? Go find her. There’s something ultra-romantic and straight forward about going out to seek the one you love, traveling miles, and confessing your adoration. Any man that travels far with the sole purpose of “loving” her and only her, has about a 98% chance of having the feeling reciprocated. We fall for that kind of stuff. Just make sure when you get there, you have that rushed sense of “I’ve missed you so much that I just couldn’t…” blah blah you get the picture. But don’t abuse this romantic charm, make sure you know the lady and have a chance with her.

Send her gifts. Seriously.

It’s not that she’s a gold digger, but women want to be thought of and sometimes in tangible ways —and they want to be able to think of you in tangible ways too. By sending her little gifts, you’re not only showing her you love her, but it also ensures she will be remembering YOU every time she looks at it. hehe…slick one. This is why “gift giving” during courtship (and hopefully thereafter) is one of the most romantic, charming tricks in the book. You get extra extra bonus points if these gifts aren’t generic and have something to do with her inner, personal life (……) LIKE something she’s casually brought up in conversation, something that complements her life and aesthetics.

TELL her you’re taking her out to lunch.
Remember, passivity is the devil. Be bold about it and respectful. Treat her like a lady from the Victorian era and then watch as she unfolds into a minx later on. But before all that, don’t casually ask a woman your pinning for out to lunch….TELL her you’re taking her: “I’m taking you to lunch today. I was thinking that Greek restaurant. How’s 1:30 later on today? I’ll pick you up outside your office.” BOOM. Brilliance. And if you’re rejected, well it depends on HOW you’re rejected, be persistent until you know it’s a no-go.

Compliment her.

Some men think that they will boost a woman’s head up if they compliment her. Not the case: a happy, confident woman is a happy, confident man. As long as the compliments aren’t excessive, they are necessary. Notice the little things. She’ll reward you later.

Conduct a scavenger hunt.

Start with an anonymous note. Maybe a series of poems or riddles. Nothing to sappy or romantic, just enough to get her looking at places. Think of the movie “Amelie.” Remember what SHE put that man through? Of course they end up together in the end! Leave little clues around your city/town that lead to more clues. The end result doesn’t matter, it’s the anticipation that counts. Leave her a note at the gas station/deli, which leads to an old movie theater, have a ticket waiting for her, etc etc. Get creative. The more work you put in, the more impressed she’ll be.
