Series Two: The Art and Craft of Shaving

Here’s an “Art of Shaving” exclusive from one of our favorite readers, Rafael Quinones. He’d like to share his take on the craft and mystery of shaving…

In a recent interview, self-titled cufflinks connoisseur Raf “The Man” Quinones says the following about his shaving regime:

“I always do the cold water rinse and use the Alum Block.”

“Alum is a mineral that has been used as an antiseptic since the days of ancient Egypt. It’s alcohol-free, but it doesn’t feel that way. It will instantly stop all bleeding from a cut because it naturally closes the pores and eliminates any bacteria, so nothing can get infected. It stings a lot, or a little, depending on how you shaved…but at least it lets you know what areas you were too rough on. Just rinse it off after a couple seconds.”

What else? Did you know: Rose water helps!

“While I’m showering and shaving, I keep a bottle of rose water in the fridge. This gets it nice and cool. Then I spray the cool rose water all over my face, which feels refreshing and soothing—but also the rose water acts like a natural toner for your skin, keeping it moisturized.”

What’s your last step in your shaving routine?

“Lastly, I use an alcohol-free after shave balm to moisturize, and for keeping the facial skin smooth. It also helps prevent ingrown hairs and skin irritation after the shave.

Oh! Last thing—I’m sure you saw it on the videos, but DO NOT USE TOO MUCH PRESSURE while shaving. The razor is really sharp and you will cut yourself if you press down. The razor is heavy, and at the right angle it does all the work itself—all you need to do is guide it.”

Top Habits that Improve Your Looks

Change your sheets regularly. Dirty sheets lead to facial break outs. It’s quite an obvious tip, but many people don’t bother to change their sheets every other week. The longer that pillow case sits at the head of your bed, the more acne you’ll have by morning…Farah Averill from Askmen.com says the following: “It’s particularly important to lay out some fresh bedding if you frequently have a female in your bed, as residue from women’s makeup and hair products can get left behind on your sheets and subsequently be transferred to your face.”

See a barber every three to six weeks to get a mandatory shape up. Some men let this slide and go longer without getting a hair cut. But we’re here to let you know gentlemen, it’s necessary to keep up the clean cut. Necessity for a clean, polished look, and won’t hurt your wallet too much at around $12-$15 a pop.

Shave after showering. Who would thunk it? Well, you know that foggy mirror you see when you step outside the raining waters of the shower head? It’s the humidity from the hot water and it actually opens up your pores and softens the hair follicle. Ever see those movies where the men in barber shops put a hot towel compress on the face for several minutes? it’s the same thing, but it will save your complexion and make for an easier shave if you  wait until after you hit the shower.
Wash your feet everyday, with soap. No brainer right? Ah, but some men think that the drips of shampoo that cascade down from the head or chest or other surrounding areas is good enough to clean the feet. NOT true. Bacteria builds up quickly on the feet, especially because it’s a moist area that is normally covered throughout must of the day. Get in between the toes with the soap and rinse clean. You’ll save money on odor-eaters too in the long run.

Water!! Water and water! If you spend so much time in your sacred, coveted shower, think how much the inside of your body loves water? Drink at least 8 glasses a day. it flushes out your system, reduces facial blemishes, and keeps your skin radiate and fresh.

How Can I Save Money? (To Buy Cufflinks)

Wednesday, October 12th, 2011

Yesterday we got an email from a man residing in Astoria, Queens. Thought we’d share:

Dear Cufflinksman,

Lately the state of the economy has been getting to me. As a New Yorker, although I wasn’t a part of “The Rent is Too Damn High Party,” but I was tempted to be. I won’t disclose my political affiliations, because it’s not relevant here, but like I said, things are getting shaky around here. My rent went up again last month, the price of coffee is rising, subway rides are now $2.25, cabs have an extra dollar attached to them, and when I visit my cousin in NJ I have to pay TWELVE dollars to get back in the city. Something’s gotta give right? I love buying your cufflinks and follow your blogs, but money is tight these days. Have any advice about saving money so I can stay looking fresh everyday?

Yours,
IAmTheKING

Dear IAmTheKING,

Yes, we hear you. Boy do we hear you! Thank you for your support over the years and we hope things will get better for you! As New Yorkers, we are experiencing the same price changes as you, and are here to offer some savvy tips on saving a buck or two so you can re-route it to buying things you really love: like cufflinks! (And other fashionable goods that add to your “fresh” look).

TIP #1

Coffee. Instead of paying for a grande or a venti coffee at Starbucks, order a size down but say you want it in a larger cup. Normally when a person fills up a cup for you, they over pour anyway, and the “leave some room” part of the order pinches out your extra coffee. So simply ask for a bigger cup. Example Convo:

May I have a tall coffee in a grande cup?

TIP #2

Use Google Phone. Instead of wasting your cellphone minutes, if you have free wi-fi on your cell, get a google number and have people call you there. That way you won’t ever go over on your minutes and can possibly change your plan to lower the minutes/monthly price. Yeah.

TIP #3

Share wi-fi with your neighbors! If you’re a New Yorker, save the extra $30-50 bucks a month by sharing internet with Joe down the hall. That is, assuming you know your neighbors. If not, don’t even bother. It would just be awkward.

TIP #4

Use Groupon, Living Social, Woot, etc to purchase haircuts, pedicures, dinners, lunches, brunch…and more! If you’re thinking of going to Brunch Sunday with your significant other or a small group, look into Groupon for pre-paid lunches and drinks. You will even find new restaurants out of the deal and try something new!

TIP #5

Retailmenot.com and other “checkout code” websites. We’ve personally saved a lot on internet purchases through typing in special codes at check-out. Different codes can be acquired at random sites throughout the internet, but one of the most popular is retailmenot. If the code doesn’t work, it’s nobody’s loss, continue on with the purchase.

TIP #6

Never grocery shop while your hungry. Everything will look appealing and appetizing. You’ll end up spending way too much on that gourmet cheese only made in Switzerland or those organic berries that your mouth is watering for. Suddenly, the curry mix you pass every other week will call out your name and…you get the point.

TIP #7

Drink more water. And don’t be afraid of tap water. Studies have shown that plastic bottles harbor bacteria and ALSO most of these “natural” spring water sources contain more bacteria than your average city water. NYC is especially good with their water sanitation and produces a surprisingly good potable water. So grab your metal water bottle, turn on the tap, and drink your money!
